Lord Krishna's foster mother is Yashoda, the wife of Nanda, the chieftain of Gokul. Krishna was born to Devaki but was secretly brought to Yashoda and Nanda to be raised in hiding from his uncle, the tyrannical king Kamsa. Yashoda's love for Krishna is a central theme in many Hindu scriptures, often depicted through stories of his mischievous childhood, such as the time she tried to tie him to a mortar with a rope that was always just too short.
